Update: Meadowlands Xanadu Ski Dome

So I once again found myself at Giants Stadium last night to take in the Springsteen show.  Above is a current photo of the Meadowlands Xanadu complex.  Forgive the crappy camera phone shot, but you can see they’ve been making some good progress since my last post on this subject (nice design huh?… something tells me some long nights and heavy pharmaceuticals were involved in that process).

Latest word is that the Ski Dome is still slated to open sometime this fall.  I tried reaching out to the media relations contact for Xanadu to get a more detailed update but my multiple emails seem to have been ignored.  Great PR!  Maybe Xanadu should call BBPR for better service?

Anyway if you want more information visit:  MeadowlandXanadu.com  but don’t hold your breath… these guys update their site about as often as a nun buys condoms.

Alphanumeric Launch Party at UNIV

This doesn’t really qualify as “east coast snowboarding” related… but my boy is tight with the crew at UNIV and I always liked Alpha#.  Unfortunately, Sal is to busy with reporting from the red carpets of E! to be joining them this time around - HR

Liberty University to Get First SnowFlex Slope in US

LYNCHBURG, Virginia, July 21, 2008 –A portion of Liberty University’s 5,000-
acre mountain range will be receiving a monumental makeover in the coming
months with the construction of a year-round ski slope known as the Liberty
Mountain Snowflex Center.

Upon completion, the artificial snow sports incline will be the first in the U.S.
surfaced with Snowflex®, a synthetic material designed to simulate snow. The
Discovery Channel is documenting this historic event and will air several phases
of the construction on a future episode of Daily Planet.

Invented in 1993 by Brian Thomas of Briton Engineering, Snowflex originated in
the UK and has been installed in several facilities throughout Europe. This
innovative technology features small, built-in misting devices that lubricate the
slope’s surface, recreating the slip and grip of real snow.

The idea of building a snow-free ski slope on Liberty Mountain began three years
ago when the university hired Alpentech Inc., a Salt Lake City, Utah consulting
firm, to investigate several ways LU could use its mountain property to meet
Liberty’s academic, financial and recruiting goals. In addition to giving students
more recreational, physical education and fitness opportunities on campus, the
slope will help establish skiing and/or snowboarding as LU club sports.

“When the LaHaye family donated the ice rink and student recreation center at
LU, Mrs. [Beverly] LaHaye stated that her goal was to give prospective students
as many reasons as possible to choose LU over secular institutions,” stated
Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. “The slope has the same purpose.”

The Liberty Mountain Snowflex Center will consist of a main ski slope and a
beginner slope for ski and snowboard instruction, totaling about 40,537 square
feet of skiable area. Jumps and additional features on the main slope include a
tabletop, a big kicker, an 11-foot high quarter pipe, two grind rails and an extreme tube chute. Those who prefer tubing may do so at designated times.

A ski lodge will also be installed, permitting parties and other special events.
Construction is slated to begin late August or early September with an anticipated grand opening around the start of the new year, 2009.

Mount Snow to Host AST Dew Tour

West Dover, Vt. (July 15, 2008 ) – Freestyle skiing and snowboarding’s elite athletes will converge in southern Vermont January 8-11, 2009, as officials announced today that Mount Snow has been selected as the only East Coast stop of the AST Winter Dew Tour.

The announcement comes on the heels of Mount Snow’s decision to turn its Carinthia mountain face into a massive, 95-acre terrain park system, making it the largest freestyle destination in the East.

After several years of successful summer tours, this is the Dew Tour’s inaugural winter series. The event features slopestyle and superpipe disciplines in both skiing and snowboarding, with top athletes like Simon Dumont, Kelly Clark, Hannah Teter and Jen Hudak expected to compete. It will be televised live on NBC.

“We are extremely excited to have Mount Snow Resort as a host for the inaugural AST Winter Dew Tour,” said Wade Martin, AST President. “We feel that Mount Snow Resort is a great fit for the AST and we look forward to the AST Winter Tour being as successful as the AST Summer Dew Tour.”

“The timing couldn’t be better,” said Kelly Pawlak, Mount Snow General Manager. “We want to show the world that Mount Snow is taking East Coast freestyle skiing and snowboarding to new levels. It’s really an honor to host the Winter Dew Tour.”

“I’m so excited that Mount Snow will be hosting the AST,” said pro snowboarder Kelly Clark, who grew up riding at Mount Snow Academy. “I’m really excited to compete at such a high level event in front of my hometown and ride my favorite mountain.”

Mount Snow opened the first freestyle terrain park in the East in 1992 and hosted the ESPN X-Games in 2000 and 2001.

The Dew tour features three separate stops over the winter, with a cumulative points system and a $1.5 million competitive purse spread across the three events. Lifestyle elements at each stop include the Festival Village, with video gaming and interactive events, as well as live cutting edge music. More information can be found at www.ast.com.

The complete 2008/2009 AST Winter Dew Tour schedule is as follows:
