Wescott Brings Boardercross to Sugarloaf

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – Fresh off of a World Cup win in Switzerland less than two weeks ago, Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott will unveil the new Sidewinder Snowboardcross Course at Sugarloaf on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 10:00 am. Wescott will speak about the course, which he designed himself, lead the inaugural run through, and host an autograph session following the event in the Sugarloaf Board Room.

Wescott has been heavily involved in the development of the new course from the very beginning, and spent the past week since his World Cup victory riding in a snow cat to put the finishing touches on his design.

“Snowboardcross is a rapidly growing sport and having a permanent course like this puts Sugarloaf in the forefront for snowboardcross training and competitions,” Wescott said. “It’s been great fun being able to design the course from scratch, and I hope people will enjoy it.”

Following the opening ceremonies at 10:00 am, Wescott will lead a lucky group of riders through the course and head to the Sugarloaf Board Room for an autograph session from 11:00 am-12:00 pm.

The Sidewinder Snowboardcross course is located underneath the SuperQuad, and is part of a revamped terrain park scene at Sugarloaf. In addition to Sidewinder, the resort redesigned its Superpipe, added a new advanced park and a new beginner park, redesigned its intermediate park, and launched a new Terrain Park web site at http://www.sugarloaf.com/terrainparks.

Wescott, who lives year round at the base of Sugarloaf, is one of the most decorated athletes in snowboarding today, and the only athlete ever to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport of snowboardcross. He is a former snowboardcross World Champion, and began this year’s World Cup tour with a victory in Arosa, Switzerland.

Mainers will be able to see Wescott race for another World Cup victory when the US Snowboarding World Cup comes to Sunday River in Newry, Maine Feb. 26-Mar. 1.
