US Snowboarding Grand Prix Rolls Into Killington March 13-15

KILLINGTON, Vt. (March 4, 2009) – The best snowboarders in the world return to Killington Resort’s Bear Mountain March 14-15 to battle for more than $80,00 in cash at  the finals of the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix, presented by Sprint, America’s top snowboarding competition tour.

 

killington_grandprixNBC will broadcast the Killington U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix event on March 21st at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The event will also be broadcast on Versus March 21st at 4 p.m. EDT and March 28th at 5 p.m. EDT. American Ska Band Reel Big Fish will also perform live on the Bear Mountain stage on Saturday, March 14.

“We’re very excited to once again host the best snowboarders in the world and showcase our world-class terrain parks and Superpipe,” said Patricia Ryan, director of sales and marketing for Killington Resort. “With the debut of The Stash this season, combined with hosting the Grand Prix, Bear Mountain is ‘the’ place for freeriding in the east.”

Riders will compete on Killington’s 430-foot long Olympic-sized halfpipe, featuring 22-foot walls, to determine the overall series champion. Halfpipe riders will be battling for $56,000 in cash, including $14,000 each to the men’s and women’s winners.

Heading into the finals at Killington, Louie Vito (Sandy, Utah), the defending U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix halfpipe champion, is tied with Steve Fisher (Breckenridge, Colo.) atop the overall standings through two events this season. Vito won the opening halfpipe event at Copper Mountain, Colo., while Fisher finished second. He also won the halfpipe final at Killington last year. Fisher took the second halfpipe event of the season at Boreal, Calif. as Vito finished second. JJ Thomas (Golden, Colo.), 15th at Copper Mountain and fourth at Boreal, and Dylan Bidez (Minturn, Colo.), third at Boreal will also be podium contenders at Killington as well.

On the women’s side, it will be a battle of Vermonters for the overall title. Kelly Clark (West Dover, Vt.), the 2002 Olympic halfpipe champion and defending Grand Prix Champion, is leading the standings after winning the opening event at Copper Mountain. Hannah Teter (Belmont, Vt.), the 2006 Olympic halfpipe champion, finished third at Copper. Teter then won the Boreal event as Clark finished second. Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, Colo.), silver medalists from the 2006 Olympics, sits third overall following a seventh-place finish at Copper and third at Boreal. Up-and-coming rider Kaitlyn Farrington (Sun Valley, Idaho) finished fourth at Boreal and seventh at Copper Mountain and will be gunning for her first podium at Killington.

The Paul Mitchell Progression Session Slopestyle will take place on Killington’s Lower Skyeburst trail, featuring rails, boxes and numerous jumps. Riders will compete for a $30,000 cash purse, including $7,500 to each to the men’s and women’s winners.

The U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix, presented by Sprint, at Killington kicks off on Friday, March 13 with halfpipe qualification at 9:30 a.m. On Saturday, the Paul Mitchell Progression Session slopestyle qualification starts at 9 a.m., followed by the halfpipe finals at 1 p.m. Sunday’s Paul Mitchell Progression Session slopestyle finals will take place at 1 p.m. Reel Big Fish will perform at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday on the Bear Mountain stage.

Spectators are invited to view the competition from the deck or the bottom of the halfpipe, or follow the action live on the jumbo screen. All events are free and open to the public.
