Saturday March 21, 2009 –  Danny Kass rode into the history books today earning a record setting 5th US Open halfpipe title.   Under bluebird skies and in front of 15,000 fans the world’s best snowboarders gathered at Stratton Mountain, Vermont for the 27th Annunal Burton US Open snowboard championships.   With a run that consisted of a fs 1080 to cab 180 combo, fs 900, bs 720 and switch alley-oop 540, Danny Kass pulled it all together on his last run to best the field and take the top spot.

Following Danny on the podium was Swatch TTR overall champion, Peetu Piiroinen and Frends crew rider and Stratton local, Luke Mitrani.  Mitrani took home double honors today also winning the AMP best trick award for his switch double back flip.

On the women’s side Torah Bright made some history of her own, taking home the top spot and tying Kelly Clark’s record for most women’s US Open titles.  Bright’s winning run of a cab 720 indy to crippler 720, bs 360 indy, switch bs 720 to bs 540, edged her over Clark to take the win.  Clark held on for a second place finish with Darien, CT’s Ellery Hollingsworth making her first US Open podium appearance in third.  Bright also took home the women’s AMP best trick for her swithc bs 720.

Danny had this to say about his record-breaking fifth US Open halfpipe title, “I feel amazing, I am beyond stoked that this is my fifth win,” said Danny Kass. “It feels great to come out again and put together some runs. I was feeling it today for sure.”

The 27th Annual US Open wraps up tomorrow with the junior jam halfpipe competition, followed by men’s and women’s slopestyle finals, after which three major titles will be awarded: the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series men’s and women’s title, the Volvo Most Valuable Rider Award and the Men’s Swatch TTR World Tour Champion award.
