Spot Check: Okemo 12-6-09

Lining up for first turns

This weekend brought the first significant snowfalls of the season to many areas of the northeast.  It also marked the start of 2009/2010 season for Okemo Mountain.  So with the snow falling here in NJ, I packed up the car and headed north with the crew from Method Board Shop in Cedar Grove to see what Southern Vermont had to offer.

Fresh snow always adds an extra level of excitement to a snowboarding roadtrip, and with the snow following us all the way up toVermont we went to bed with powder dreams.  Unfortunately a powder day was not in our future and althought the 5 inches of new snow that fell over night did not allow for any new terrain expansions, it did give what was open a nice resurfacing.

What was open, were 2 trails from the summit and a small early-season terrain park with 3 features.  Not much on paper, but as the only open terrain in southern Vermont, it was a much welcomed opportunity for those of us there to get out and make some turns again.  Much credit goes out to Okemo and their snowmaking team for making their opening date despite some really marginal weather, especially since all their neighbors were all forced to push their openings back.

It looks like this past weekend might just be the turning point that the northeast has been looking for.  With cold temps and natural snow settling into the forecast, it’s Game On!  Since Sunday Okemo has already opened 6 new trails and there’s even plans for them to possibly open new terrain in the Jackson Gore  area this weekend.   Look for more terrain to open quickly as temperatures  and snow conditions allow.
